Conservative Talk Radio: If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Change ‘Em
Ron Smith, writing online in The Baltimore Sun has a few thoughts on the F.C.C's new "diversity czar", Mark Lloyd. Smith cites blogger Bobby Eberle who outlines Lloyd's plan:
"...restore local and national caps on the number of commercial radio stations a single company is allowed to own."
"...greater local accountability over radio licensing, which means flexing those community-organizing muscles of ACORN and other left-wing pressure groups."
"...require radio companies which fail to abide...to pay a compulsory fee to support...public broadcasting."
Smith ends by saying: "...the newly empowered left, angry that the listening public prefers conservative radio, will force radio stations to air unpopular liberal programs, the market place be damned."
More: Who is Mark Lloyd and Why is Conservtive Talk Radio Concerned?

Aussie Gardening Guru Uses Radio Show to Denigrade Parsnips - What?
No, it's not one of the most important controversies so far this year, maybe just one of the silliest. Besides: it's Monday. Australian gardening figure, Don Burke "...used his radio program to slam Ms Hay and the The Sunday Telegraph for publishing parsnip recipes in the Sunday Magazine," says news.com.au.Burke went on to describe Hay as "'wretched' for serving parsnips to people as they were not fit for pigs."
Well, there it is: The great parsnip feud of '09 and Radio helped to facilitate it.

Who is Mark Lloyd and Why is Conservtive Talk Radio Concerned?
Last month, Mark Lloyd was named the Chief Diversity Officer at the Federal Communications Commission.Fox News says: "The FCC's new chief diversity officer laid out a battle plan two years ago for liberal activists to target conservative talk radio stations, and critics say they are concerned that he now will want to bring back the 'Fairness Doctrine.'"
Although Lloyd denies that is part of a plan, "...but critics suspect he has a hidden agenda to curtail conservative talk radio. They say Lloyd is the wrong person for his new post," says Fox.
Both Sides of the Issue: An Antiquated Regulation or Worth a Second Look?
Opinion: The Fairness Doctrine: Free Speech and the Radio Marketplace

Changing the Delivery of Radio: South African Company Runs WiMAX Test
An audio codec manufacturer in Johannesburg, South Africa is laying claim to having delivered a world sports first by broadcasting live audio over WiMAX.
WiMAX is a telecommunications technology that provides broadband IP wireless transmission through a 802.11b/g wireless ethernet bridge. It creates a high speed, long range private LAN connection between two points or multiple points. Think of it as a WiFi hotspot that covers up to 50 or so miles instead of just a few hundred feet.
Tieline Technology offered a soccer match in conjunction with the South African Broadcasting Corporation. The WiMAX test broadcast originated from a stand-alone base station and covered an area of just under 2 miles in diameter.

Slacker Radio Offers Free BlackBerry Curve with 2 Year Phone Plan
There is no better promotion than building the infrastructure for your product. That's exactly what Slacker Radio is doing. Back in the 1970s when FM was desperately seeking listeners, stations gave away FM converter kits to vehicle owners who only had AM radios.Taking a cue from that, Slacker Radio is giving away BlackBerry Curves to users who sign up for a 2-year cell phone plan. As informationweek.com notes: "The company is having this promotion to celebrate the success of its BlackBerry application, as it said more than one million customers have downloaded Slacker."
AT&T subscribers can grab a Curve 8310, Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless users can get a Curve 8330, and T-Mobile folks can walk away with a Curve 8320. The catch: 2 year agreement starting at 39.99/month and data plan, which will bump the cost up from there. You'll pay an activation fee and undergo a credit check.
For more information and even finer print, go to www.slacker.com/promo/freephone.
