Testimony Continues in Trial Where Listener Died After Radio Station Contest
Remember the story about the radio station contest where participants had to drink water and hold it? It was a contest called "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" but nobody expected a mother of three to die from it. It was January, 2007 and the hosts of KDND-FM's 'Morning Rave' -- who went by the on-air names Trish, Maney and Lukas -- were fired over it.Jennifer Lea Strange, 28, died of water intoxication after participating and now it's in court. According to sacbee.com: "The broadcast executive in charge of the radio station...testified today that he never knew about the event until he got word several hours afterward that Jennifer Lea Strange had died."
Lawyers for the plaintiff are trying to establish that Entercom Communications, parent company to KDND-FM, "...lacked the internal controls to prevent the dangerous contests from taking place." The trial continues.
Hear It: Here is an edited version of some audio from the contest including members of the morning show including the voice of contestant Jennifer Strange. Listen here.

MacKenzie Phillips Incest Allegation Forces Oldies Radio to Question ‘Mamas & Papas’ Airplay
Ever since this week's startling announcement by Mackenzie Phillips that she and her father, John Phillips (founding member of The Mamas and Papas), had an incestuous 10-year relationship there's been an ongoing conversation about airplay. For instance, spinner.com writes about Boston Oldies-formatted radio station Oldies 103.3 and quotes Program Director, Jay Beau Jones, saying, "If the station plays 'California Dreamin'' or 'Monday, Monday,' my concern is the audience will have a negative reaction and turn off the radio."
The article goes on to say: "When [Cammy] Blackstone [from KFRC] was on the air, there were numerous episodes involving core Oldies artists -- Phil Spector's murder case, James Brown's domestic problems, accusations of child molestation against Michael Jackson and Gary Glitter. 'I don't recall any listeners every calling and saying, Why are you playing that child molester she says."

The Battle Continues Between Old Radio and New Media
Who's listening to terrestrial Radio? More than you may think based on new stats from Nielsen, which just reported some results from it's new measurement service."...18-to-34-year-olds listen to radio an average of 21.5 hours per week. That puts their listening in line with all people over the age of 12, and debunks the assumption that young people are glued to their iPods for most of the day," reports Matthew Flamm at crainsnewyork.com.
Cumulus Radio, a client of Nielsen with radio stations in 51 markets, thought this was good news. According to Chief Operating Officer, Lew Dickey: "Most notable is the notion that radio has lost its hipness and relevance among younger audiences. Nielsen's data proves that this is not the case."

See Glenn Beck as a ‘Morning Zoo’ Radio Host in the 1980s
A 1986 YouTube clip of a TV ad for the Y95/Phoenix "Morning Zoo" featuring Glenn Beck and Tim Hattrick is getting a lot of exposure. It's also garnering a lot of disdain from Beck critics.
Animalnewyork.com
Huffingtonpost.com quotes Beck's former partner, Hattrick, as saying: "...he was great at being a grandstanding, pompous idiot and shaking the brushes for attention."
For the record, the commercial was a syndicated ad which was customized for radio stations and "zoo-formatted" morning shows. In the mid 1980s, the zoo format was the hottest morning show format in commercial radio and the ad Beck and Hattrick appear in was duplicated many times over by various stations and personalities. In that respect, there is nothing special or unique about Beck or Hattrick's dialogue or the commercial's features, which include a monkey. It's a boilerplate ad.

Last.fm Makes a Move: Internet Radio Jumps to HD
Since the inception of Internet Radio, the model for most established AM and FM terrestrial stations has been to use the Internet to stream already created content. Here comes a small paradigm shift: Last.fm is jumping from Internet to over-the-air broadcasting in four large markets.According to a Billboard article by Antony Bruno as reported by hollywoodreporter.com, "Starting Oct. 5, the Last.fm station will be multicast on CBS's high-definition radio channels in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco -- as well as streamed on CBS Radio's Web site -- as a programmed channel."
CBS Radio, which owns Last.fm, is betting Last.fm programming will give a boost to HD Radio.

BBC Radio Star Admits: Behavior Was Outrageous and Delusional
Chris Evans, who will take over the Radio 2 breakfast show from Sir Terry Wogan when he leaves next year, admits in his autobiography that, "...his behaviour while on Radio 1 [w]as 'outrageous' and 'delusional' and added he had 'lost all perspective'." (Photo courtesy of BBC Radio)
Evans worked for two years on Radio 1 in the mid 1990s and left in 1997. He admits: "I knew that for the first time in my career I had really messed up. I should have known better," according to a news item from the online version of BBC News.
Personally, I'm not surprised at any behavior I see from radio people, especially morning personalities. You'd know that if you read any of my "Wacky World of Radio" articles like this one: "The Wacky World of Radio - Deejays".

Radio Towers Bulldozed by Eco-Terrorists
It appears two radio towers in Everett, Washington were toppled by an eco-terrorist group. A neighbor who called 911 told the dispatcher someone attacked the towers with a bulldozer.According to breitbart.com: "A sign bearing the letters ELF was found near the towers, said Andy Skotdal, general manager of KRKO Radio in Everett, about 25 miles north of Seattle. The Earth Liberation Front is a loose collection of radical environmentalists that has claimed responsibility for dozens of attacks since the 1990s."
For over 10 years, KRKO has been engaged in litigation including an issue over whether a plan to increase its signal might interfere with a nearby trumpeter swan habitat, according to breitbart.com.
