Jury Awards $16.5 Mil in Radio Station Contest Death

The verdict is in on at least one radio station's stunt: $16.5 million. That's how much a Sacramento County jury awarded the family of Jennifer Strange, the 28-year-old woman who died after taking part in KDND-FM's water drinking contest.

Strange died in January 2007 after participating in a contest called "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" in hopes of winning a Nintendo Wii video game system.

Yesterday, jurors found Entercom Sacramento LLC (owned by Entercom Communications Corp.) liable for the death which occurred because of the actions of KDND-FM's "Morning Rave" morning show. Soon after the death, 10 employees were terminated.

‘Balloon Boy’ Story Has Been Goldmine for Morning Radio Shows

The "Balloon Boy" story has been a godsend to radio shows everywhere, especially morning shows. This is the kind of story that has everything: drama, humor, stupidity, criminality, and something else: a traceable history. Thanks to sites like YouTube, reporters and bloggers have been able to research and share a condensed audio/video history of Richard Heene, the father and mastermind behind the balloon hoax, and his amusing family. (Screenshot: www.news9.com)

Plus, this is also the kind of news item that inspires the professional humor services whose job it is to provide radio personalities with parodies, skits, and bits on a daily basis. Balloon Boy, Balloon Mom, and the whole family cast has been a gold mine of show prep for people who do morning shows, like me.

If you'd like to hear some of the work that comes from a professional radio service, visit the American Comedy Network, one of the country's oldest and longest running show prep services. There is plenty of online audio and video spoofs that anyone can access without being a radio station subscriber.

Soupy Sales Dead, Once Worked on Radio Between Don Imus and Howard Stern

Soupy Sales has died at the age of 83. Sales was a comedian, TV host, and even a radio personality. Although his fame came mostly from "The Soupy Sales Show", a syndicated offering in the mid-1960s, Sales also has a radio claim: for a time he was the radio personality at WNBC-AM/New York between Don Imus and Howard Stern beginning in 1985. (Screenshot: broadcatching.wordpress.com)

This WNBC-AM publicity photo features (left to right): Soupy Sales, Don Imus, Howard Stern, and Wolfman Jack. A larger version can be seen at broadcatching.wordpress.com.

On a personal note: Years ago when I worked in Chicago radio I had the chance to interview Soupy Sales on my show. He was a delightful, gentle, funny man.

Obama Compares Fox News to Talk Radio

President Obama personally jumped into the White House vs. Fox News fray yesterday telling NBC's Savannah Guthrie, "And if media is operating, basically, as a talk radio format, then that's one thing. And if it's operating ... as a news outlet, then that's another."

Recent comments from surrogates from the Obama Administration have been aimed at Fox News in an effort to denigrate the network as something less and a real news operation by blurring the line between reporting and commentary.

Ironically, early television programming sprang from the more popular radio programming of the day. But, that was a long time ago. The White House would have you believe the trend is happening again. Well, if Fox News emulates talk radio (and the White House really means conservative talk radio) then I think it would be fair to suggest MSNBC emulates another player in talk radio: the progressive Air America.

Jon Gosselin Prices Himself Out of Radio Appearance

Radio shows are always looking for a way to draw attention to themselves. So, when the MJ Morning Show at 93.3 FLZ in Tampa offered Jon Gosselin "...two first class round trip plane tickets, limo service and a 'first class' hotel room..." to act as a guest host for one morning his rep asked for an appearance fee in the "10 - 12K range" according to tmz.com.

Tmz.com says: "The radio host tells us he 'fell out of his chair'..." Needless to say, Gosselin won't be guest hosting any time soon.

Online: You can listen to the MJ Morning show online at mj.933flz.com.

Radio Host Rush Limbaugh Will Not Get into St. Louis Rams ‘Investor End Zone’

It looks like Rush Limbaugh's foray into NFL ownership is going to be stopped in its tracks. Tmz.com reports the conservative radio talk show host has been officially dropped by the group which is looking to purchase the St. Louis Rams. (Right: Rush Limbaugh Publicity Photo)

Tmz.com says: "Ever since word got out that the conservative mouthpiece was interested in the team, several people lashed out against it -- including the owner of the Indianapolis Colts, the head of the NFL Player's Association and even Al Sharpton."

Foxsports.com confirms Limbaugh's ouster and said, "St. Louis Blues chairman Dave Checketts...said in a statement Wednesday that Limbaugh's participation had complicated the effort. The group will move forward without him."

St. Louis Alderman, Antonio French, was ready to introduce a resolution at Friday's board meeting asking the team to reject and attempt at Limbaugh to become an investor. Now, it may be a moot point.
