Audionow: ‘Listen to Any Radio Station on Any Phone Free’

That's the claim from Audionow.com, currently in BETA. A visitor to radio.about.com tipped me off and wrote, "A few months ago a friend turned me on to Audionow that let's me listen to radio by calling a number at the station. I use it all the time instead of the apps on my Iphone from different stations. It is easier and more stable."

The Audionow.com website describes what it does this way: "The company's proprietary protected technology is the product of years of research and design. Our systems convert virtually any audio format available on the Internet and streams that connect to the AudioNow gateway server which then relays that stream to any phone listener."

You must register for the service and the company will ask for your name, phone number, email, and cell phone provider. You'll also have to agree to the terms of service. I read through the terms of service and they appear to be fairly straight-forward. Let me know if it works for you.

To register, go to this page at www.audionow.com.
For the homepage of the website, go this page at www.audionow.com.

Citadel Broadcasting Files Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

It's official: one of the big players in radio has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Citadel is the third-largest U.S. radio company and owns legacy stations like WABC/New York and WLS/Chicago.

The filing happened today (12/20/09) in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

Nick Cannon to be New Morning Host at New York’s 92.3 Now

On January 19, 2010 Nick Cannon will start as the new morning host on WXRK-FM/New York (92.3 Now), according to David Hinckely at nydailynews.com.

Cannon is host of "America's Got Talent" on NBC and is also married to Mariah Carey.

"I always wanted to do radio," said Cannon in The Hollywood Reporter which writes Cannon "...has frequently filled in for radio hosts Ryan Seacrest and Steve Harvey."

Mediaweek.com says: "Since CBS launched 92.3 Now in March, the Top 40 station has climbed in the ratings, ranking No. 1 with teens. Though ratings have increased, it still has a ways to go to catch up with Clear Channel's WHTZ-FM, the No. 4 station in New York."

The band, Rage Against the Machine, "...incited mass panic at a British radio show this morning -- when the lead singer unleashed a string of f-bombs during a live on-air performance," according to tmz.com.

Jonathon Brandmeier Fires Back at Those Who Fired Him from WLUP-FM

We all deal with unemployment differently. Some of us sulk, some of us try to keep ourselves busy so we don't think about it. Jonathon Brandmeier, recently let go from WLUP-FM/Chicago, just posted a rap video which takes shots at the radio suits who fired him along with his current predicament.

It goes in part:

"Johnny B.'s the best and he's got awards to prove it,
But now the suits say it's cheaper to play music.
Hey, monkey: push a button and play another song,
Talent on the radio just doesn't belong.
Enjoy this crap while you can 'cause it won't last long."

See it: You can view "Johnny B "Unemployed Mo Fo" at this link at www.youtube.com. (Note: Contains strong language and is NSFW)

Third-Largest U.S. Radio Broadcaster May File Bankruptcy

"Citadel Broadcasting Corp., the nation's third-biggest radio company...is preparing to file a prearranged bankruptcy before the end of the year, according to the Wall Street Journal and later the New York Times," according to chicagotribune.com.

Citadel Broadcasting is the third-largest radio broadcaster in the United States, according to The Wall Street Journal.

"Citadel's long-expected move is yet another reminder of the travails facing media companies, which are up against stiff competition and shifts in consumer habits. Advertising revenues have plunged for newspapers, radio broadcasters and television stations," writes the The Wall Street Journal.

SIRIUS XM Host ‘Cousin’ Bruce Morrow to Visit National Press Club

"Cousin" Bruce Morrow visits The National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. According to David Hinckley at nydailynews.com: "When he started on the radio in the late 1950s, Morrow recalls, a Journal-American columnist suggested that he must be caged in the basement when he wasn't being let out to play that awful rock 'n' roll music. He can laugh about it now because that same music is the subject of the new book that got him invited to the Press Club..." (Photo: Imagine Publishing, Inc.)

Morrow's book is Rock & Roll...And the Beat Goes On and it follows music and the culture tied to it, "Beginning with the seeds of rebellion sown by black R&B artists and escalating through the British invasion, surfer sounds, Motown soul, heavy metal, punk rebellion, and beyond," according to a press release.

The book also features more than 300 photographs, many rare.

Morrow is a longtime New York City deejay and current SIRIUS XM host.

Radio Saves Christmas in Orlando

When I read a story like this it reminds me that I work in a profession that really has the power to effect change. With the economy weighing down everyone's budget, the city of Orlando announced in November it would not put up the traditional holiday decorations thus saving $250,000.

Of course, people were disappointed. The Buckethead Show at Real Radio 104.1 came to the rescue. Cfnews13.com reports: "The show asked listeners to donate Christmas lights, decorations and canned goods for Second Harvest Food Bank, and Saturday's decorating turned out to be a great success."

In all, over 350,000 lights were donated along with much food. "...not only will people be able to drive downtown Orlando and see Lake Eola all lit up, but also knowing that a lot of food went to people who need it this holiday season, " writes cfnews13.com
