Music Legend Bob Weir Honored at XM SIRIUS Radio

On Wednesday, XM SIRIUS Radio was the backdrop for a plaque presentation to Bob Weir and recognition ceremony for artist Ioannis Vasilopoulos. The plaque, from the T.J. Martell Foundation, commemorated Weir's long association with the group which raises money for cancer and AIDS research. (Photo: Maro Hagopian)

Several XM SIRIUS Radio programmers were also in attendance to honor Weir, a founding member of The Grateful Dead, and Vasilopoulos, a famed artist who has designed album covers for legendary bands.

Radio Pros Continue to Turn to Podcasting

People who work in traditional Radio and people who would like to be in Radio all wonder if Internet Radio and Podcasting can be a viable vehicle for careers. I think the answer to this question is slowly evolving into "yes, it can".

Writing at washingtonpost.com, Mike Musgrove has a great article about longtime radio pro, Mike O'Meara. O'Meara lost his on-air gig at 106.7 last year because of a format change. "For most of O'Meara's on-air career, losing a radio show would have meant a job hunt and a move to a different market," writes Musgrave.

But, O'Meara decided to have a go at Podcasting a show and apparently he is parlaying his 25 years in the Washington, D.C. market into a viable online offering. Read Musgrave's article and you'll be able to catch more of the details. For pros who have lost their jobs over the past few years and newbies who are looking for a way to get in front of the mike, Podcasting continues to offer a surprising amount of opportunities.

Adam Lambert Chastises Cell Phone User at iheartradio Peformance

Why does a video go viral? Hard to say exactly but one element can be the surprise factor. That's why this video will probably go viral. Adam Lambert, fresh from American Idol, was doing a performance for Clear Channel Radio's iheartradio cellphone radio network.

That is...until he suddenly stopped singing and ordered an audience member to "get off your phone". He then restarted the number. You can see the incident at this link on YouTube.

Clear Channel Radio offers "iheartradio", an application for iPhones, RIM Blackberry, and Android that features hundreds of Clear Channel radio stations from around the country in various genres. For more about iheartradio, visit this link.

Early Radio Contributions Preserved for Your Enjoyment

There was a time when Radio had more status as a medium in our culture than television. As a matter of fact, TVs didn't even provide a color picture, just black & white. Only one other medium was more ubiquitous than radios and that was the telephone.

It was a time before Internet, YouTube, streaming, on-demand programming, cable TV, and even the growth of FM. It was Radio's Golden Age when radio shows were really shows and the idea of a deejay or a station playing just music was far from the norm.

Aleen Leslie started as a screenwriter in the 1930s. In 1941 she began writing a humorous radio show called A Date with Judy which ran on radio for 9 years. It was later made into a movie starring Elizabeth Taylor and even a daytime TV series.

But, it all started as a series of radio scripts written during a period when Radio attracted actors, directors, producers, and a host of professionals who took the medium as seriously as any TV show or film of today.

Aleen Leslie has passed away, three days shy of her 102nd birthday. So much has changed since she first penned the scripts to A Date with Judy. Luckily, you can still hear some of the original shows.

‘radiotuna’ a Nice Catch for Streaming Internet Radio

I'm listening to some apparently Slavic-like folk song in a language I don't understand. It's my first experience with radiotuna. Like most people, I haven't read the instructions - I'm just clicking. But, then again: sometimes it more fun to just jump in and see what happens.

radiotuna is in beta and this website will let you listen to online streams from all over the world either by genre or by doing an artist or station search.

Let's say you want to hear the Beatles. You can type "Beatles" in the artist search and it will bring up stations playing The Beatles right at that moment. Pick one and listen. Type in "Linkin Park" and it it responds just as quickly. Type in "Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band" and not surprisingly, no stations are playing cuts now...but it will tell you which stations have played that music (so you can tune in and just wait...and hope.)

radiotuna is a neat place for immediate gratification. If you want to hear something specific by the criteria it searches from, you'll enjoy radiotuna. Plus, you can bookmark stations you like in a little place called My Tuna.

Online: Visit radiotuna.

Groundhog Day: The Lost Radio Tapes

The burning question so many of us have wondered: what if we could hear more of that morning radio show that popped up on Bill Murray's radio in the movie Groundhog Day?

Because of the nature of the movie plot, only a small portion of the movie's "show" is ever heard including the repetitive playing of "I've Got You Babe" and two goofy morning deejays warning, "It's cold out there today!".

Masters of None is a podcast described as "former radio guys Mike, Art & Jay, who debate and answer mankind's most important questions each week." This week, they have used what little of the Groundhog Day movie radio show the world knew of to create a 30 minute version of what they think it might have sounded like - had you had to opportunity to hear more of it.

I found the concept clever and amusing.

Listen to Groundhog Day, the Lost Radio Tapes here at podcasts.gunaxin.com.
