Early Radio Contributions Preserved for Your Enjoyment
There was a time when Radio had more status as a medium in our culture than television. As a matter of fact, TVs didn't even provide a color picture, just black & white. Only one other medium was more ubiquitous than radios and that was the telephone. It was a time before Internet, YouTube, streaming, on-demand programming, cable TV, and even the growth of FM. It was Radio's Golden Age when radio shows were really shows and the idea of a deejay or a station playing just music was far from the norm.
Aleen Leslie started as a screenwriter in the 1930s. In 1941 she began writing a humorous radio show called A Date with Judy which ran on radio for 9 years. It was later made into a movie starring Elizabeth Taylor and even a daytime TV series.
But, it all started as a series of radio scripts written during a period when Radio attracted actors, directors, producers, and a host of professionals who took the medium as seriously as any TV show or film of today.
Aleen Leslie has passed away, three days shy of her 102nd birthday. So much has changed since she first penned the scripts to A Date with Judy. Luckily, you can still hear some of the original shows.
