Impact of Radio Airplay Still Justifies No Additional Royalty Payment

Singer Dionne Warwick has called for radio stations to pay royalties to performers when they air their music. Warwick was on Capitol Hill earlier this week lobbying lawmakers to pass a law which would force the issue.

According to digtriad.com: "Right now radio stations pay fees to songwriters. Satellite radio, Internet radio and cable TV music channels pay fees to songwriters and performers. Warwick says radio has gotten a free ride and should compensate performers like her."

Of course, Warwick fails to acknowledge the effect radio airplay has on selling CDs and digital downloads. Historically, radio airplay has been a "make or break" situation for most artists. The Internet may be helpful today in establishing artists but it's still a little too soon to count radio airplay from the old standbys, AM and FM.

Most struggling bands would kill to receive substantial radio airplay which solidifies the standing of a band or artist on a national scale. In this respect, the trade between radio airplay and not having to pay the performer a royalty is more than justified. That's just my opinion - you can leave yours below.
