Tampa Bay's FM dial lost a Smooth Jazz radio station today and gained a a new Hit Music one. At 3 p.m. this afternoon WSJT-FM flipped format to "Play 98.7." According to a news release the station "will broadcast 'today's best hits, without the rap' and feature popular music from artists such as Katy Perry, Kings of Leon, Train, John Mayer, Maroon 5, and Rob Thomas, among others." Glenn Beck's Rally: The Left and Right Are Number Crunching
Beginning moments after Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally finished at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday the media began to propose conflicting statistics on how many people actually attended. The count has turned into a war, of sorts. Detractors of Beck are trying to prove how few people attended, Beck is trying to prove how many attended, and the media as a whole is all over the road with estimates. (Glenn Beck at the Lincoln Memorial, Photo: D.B. King)

Beck thought it might be upwards to 500,000. But, CBS News hired a company which conducted an estimate of the crowd by aerial photography. Airphotoslive.com said 87,000 plus or minus 9,000.

As Michael Calderone writes at news.yahoo.com: "Some media outlets played it safe with 'tens of thousands,' a count that's indisputable. Others went with 'hundreds of thousands.' Perhaps the only thing the media agreed on -- including this reporter on hand -- is that a very large number of people assembled to hear Beck speak."

An NBC news off-air political reporter sent a tweet quoting a National Parks Service official estimating 300,000 to 325,000 notes Calderone in his article.

The Wacky World of Radio - The Radio Webmaster
My critically acclaimed series, "The Wacky World of Radio" continues with this new addition: The Radio Webmaster. The position of "Webmaster" at radio stations is a relatively newer position radio stations were forced to hire people for when the Internet finally pushed them into it. (Graphic Credit: © Corey Deitz)

Beginning in the mid-1990s, radio companies were consolidating because of deregulation and this trend manifested itself in a lot of radio folks being fired. In radio, when you are out of a job it's also called "on the beach". I'm not sure why that phrase was chosen. Maybe because most of us in Radio are overweight and if you take us out of a studio we look like beached whales. Read full article. (Humor/Satire)
